Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) is a term used to describe a digital device ownership model where Year 12 students use their personally-owned mobile devices at school. At Samford Valley Steiner School, we believe healthy computer ownership is possible for 18 year olds with family support. Below is the information on the Apple “Family Funded Program” that our school offers.
We require students to have a device before they start Year 12. It is also recommended that students have a hard case for their device. The minimum specifications needed are:
- An entry level Macbook Air
- 13” Screen
- 8GHz Intel Core i5 CPU
- 8GB RAM
- 128GB SSD
Purchasing a Laptop
To purchase your student’s Apple product, visit https://www.apple.com/au_eduind-k12-discounted_804636/shop. This secure, customised page ensures that you’re buying the Apple device your student needs, and includes free delivery or in-store pick-up.
You can also visit your local Apple Store or call 133-622 to purchase through the Apple Store contact centre. Remember to mention the Family Funded Program to receive student pricing.
Finance options are available for purchases made at an Apple Store, online or by calling the Apple Store contact centre.
Apple stores also offer workshop sessions that you can book to help you set up your student’s Macbook.
What happens after purchasing?
In Week 1 of Term 1, our IT support team will install all of the required school programs and accesses. Part of this installation will include the installation of a monitoring program (Lanschool) which will allow the monitoring of computer activity by teachers and IT staff. This can be uninstalled at the end of Year 12 if requested.
School BYOD laptop agreements will be sent out for parents and students to sign. These must be completed and returned to the High School office PRIOR to laptops being set up for school use. All Year 12 students will be required to have their Macbooks at school during the first week of Term 1 to enable this set up to happen.
